All About Turmeric

Turmeric is derived from the ground roots of a species of a ginger plant (Curcuma longa) and is native to South Asia. It contains a phtochemical called curcumin. Turmeric has so many great benefits both internally and externally, especially since it is known for it’s anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

It is a herb that can be added to food and also can be ingested in powder and pill form. Drinking turmeric tea is a common way to receive it’s benefits. Black pepper is commonly added as a bioavailability enhancer to help turmeric absorb into the bloodstream in order for it to have an active effect. To receive it’s benefits it is recommended that you have at least have 150-250 mg, while the daily recommended dose is between 500-2000 mg. It is best to consult your health care provider to discuss the appropriate dose and duration that is best for you.

These are some of the therapeutic benefits that turmeric is known for: heart health, weight management, digestive health, can help dispel toxins through the liver, brain function, lowering cholesterol, easing joint pain, gum health, easing PMS symptoms, and to fight viral infections.

Benefits for skin and hair: anti-aging, skin elasticity, acne reduction, helps with eczema and rosacea, lightens pigmentation, controls oil, lightens the appearance of stretch marks, controls scalp conditions such as dandruff, and can prevent hair loss.

Katsturi turmeric, or organic turmeric, should not stain the skin. It is suggested to mix with other ingredients to receive certain benefits; such as, honey, yogurt, lemon juice, and aloe vera gel can all be added to shampoos or other skincare products.

Turmeric can occasionally have side effects. The most common are: Stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea or dizziness. It may also aggravate some health conditions, such as, gallbladder, bleeding issues, diabetes, GERD, breast, uterine, or ovarian cancers, endometriosis, uterine fibroid, infertility and iron deficiency. It is important to consult with your doctor if you experience any of these.

If consuming more then the recommended dose it can cause an abnormal heart rhythm.

But, overall Turmeric is an amazing ingredient to add to your diet and beauty routine.
