Taking a Clean or Organic Approach in Hair Color

I love everything about being able to have fun and change up our hair styles and color. However, color can be of concern with some of the harmful ingredients that is in a lot of hair dyes and toners.

After starting to research cleaner lines, I have now incorporated them into my lifestyle. Some brands are professional lines that can be applied at a salon and some can be purchased and applied at home.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any hair color lines that are 100% organic. Most are just free of certain ingredients that are known to be toxic, while others are cruelty-free and vegan. Just like using harmful skincare ingredients that can absorb through the skin harmful chemicals can be absorbed through your scalp and end up in your bloodstream. Which can lead to many adverse health issues.

Both home and salon hair dye can contain harmful chemicals. The FDA does not require salon products that state ”For Professional Use Only” to list all the ingredients.

Chemicals to avoid are:

• Ammonia - It is an endocrine disruptor, can flare asthma and cause respiratory issues.

• Lead acetate - Linked to neurotoxicity

• p-Phenylenediamine - Can cause skin sensitivities and cancer.

• Methylisothiazolinone - Linked to allergic reactions, lung toxicity and neurotoxicity.

• Resorcinol - Is a hormone disruptor and is linked to organ toxicity.

• Toluene - Linked to kidney and liver damage, miscarriages and birth defects.

• Hydrogen peroxide - Found in blond hair dyes and can cause skin, eye and lung irritation.

• DMDM hydantoin - Can cause irritation or allergic reaction.

• Synthetic fragrance - Endocrine disruptor, reproductive problems, birth defects, respiratory problems, cancer and can flair allergies.

  My favorite at home hair color line is Madison Reed and salon color line is Essensity by Schwarzkopf. There are also other clean hair dye lines on the market to choose from that will give the beautiful result your looking for without the harsh chemicals.
