What Sparked My Passion

What Sparked My Passion

Honestly, I first became concerned with ingredients in many food products due to some health concerns. One day I wondered why I wasn't as conscious about what I put on my body and and decided that I should become more aware of ingredients in the beauty products I use.

We should be just as aware about what we are applying to our skin. After all, 60 percent of what is applied penetrates our skin and enters into our blood stream in about 26 seconds. The absorption rate is higher on the face and scalp compared to the rest of the body.

When I have spoken to women and men about this when I was freelancing for an organic skincare and makeup company, some had thanked me for educating them. Others have said they had a situation in their life that made them become more conscience of ingredients in products. And some flat out told me that they just don't care. Which I believe is fine, since everyone has a right to their own opinion. But, more than likely, some of those women or men that don't care will be impacted by something in their life that will change their opinion and start living a cleaner and organic lifestyle.

Here are a list of some ingredients that I choose to stay away from in skincare and beauty products. (I will go more in depth about these ingredients in a future post.): talc, petroleum derivatives, mineral oil, lead, formaldehyde, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), parabens, sulfates, triclosan, triclocarban, aluminium, mercury, polyethylene, Propylane glycol, Polyethylene gylcol (PEG), phthlates, Phenylenediamine (PPD), BHT, BHA, retinol, dibutyl phthalate, toluene, fragrances and dyes, benzophenone, oxybenzone, synthetic dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and animal based ingredients.

In most countries there are regulations to set standards to certify products as "organic" and a seal is displayed on the label to recognize this. Some countries have stricter standards then others.

A couple good websites/apps that can help educate you about ingredients in products, are Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep and Think Dirty.
